WISDOM WHISPERS™

Grace can recognize a new life while accountability gives a wounded community responsible reasons to trust what is becoming visible.
— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.

Word StudyParaklēsis means encouragement, appeal, or coming alongside. Barnabas embodied this ministry by bringing Saul to the apostles with concrete testimony.

THE DEVOTION

The Jerusalem disciples feared Saul for understandable reasons. He had participated in persecution and came with a reputation built through real harm. Acts does not shame the church for caution. Barnabas came alongside Saul and reported specific evidence: Saul had encountered the risen Lord and preached boldly in Damascus.

Advocacy was not vague optimism. Barnabas connected the changed person to accountable leaders and told the truth about what had happened. Grace did not require secrecy, pressure, or instant access to every relationship. Trust could begin because transformation was becoming observable in community.

This matters wherever serious harm has occurred. Repentance should produce confession, restitution where possible, changed conduct, respect for boundaries, and willingness to accept consequences. An advocate must never use spiritual influence to bypass safeguarding or force survivors to restore contact.

At the same time, communities should not make a person’s worst faithful-repented act the only identity they are ever permitted to carry. The gospel creates new life. Wise believers learn to recognize durable fruit without becoming naïve about risk.

Be a Barnabas with both courage and discernment. Come alongside people whose growth is real, connect them to accountable community, and describe evidence without exaggeration. If you are rebuilding after failure, do not demand immediate trust. Walk patiently, honor boundaries, and let truthful fruit give others reasons to see what grace is forming.
