Clean Or Unclean

THE WORD

The leper in ancient Israel was required to cry out his own diagnosis: Unclean. Unclean. He could not hide his condition. He could not pretend. He could not show up to the community worship gathering and take a strategic seat in the back and hope no one noticed. The law required radical transparency — torn garments, uncovered head, covered lip, and a verbal declaration of his own defilement. It sounds brutal. It sounds humiliating. And in the context of the ancient Near East, it was both. But there is a mercy embedded in the mandate — because the leper who declared his condition could eventually be examined by the priest, declared clean, and restored to the community. The one who hid his condition put the entire camp at risk and could never be healed.

Spiritual leprosy — the sin that creeps, spreads, contaminates, and deadens — operates on the same principle. It thrives in concealment. It spreads in silence. It infects everything it touches when it is kept in the dark. And the enemy's primary strategy against the body of Christ is not to make you a flagrant sinner — it is to make you a respectable, put-together, well-dressed leper who has learned to cry nothing at all. To perform health in public while the disease spreads privately. To show up to church, to ministry, to leadership, to relationships — lips covered, garments intact, announcing nothing — while the corruption spreads unchecked beneath the surface.

James 5:16 says, "Confess your faults one to another and pray for one another, that ye may be healed." The healing requires the confession. Not a broadcast of your sin to the world, but the deliberate, humble transparency with a trusted spiritual authority or accountability partner that creates the conditions for healing. You cannot be healed of what you will not honestly name. The leper had to say "Unclean" before the priest could examine him and declare him "Clean." And Jesus — the Great High Priest — still examines those who come to Him honestly. He will not reject the one who comes bearing the honest cry of their condition. He will touch what no one else will touch and pronounce them whole.

But here is the confrontation: you are walking into rooms — into worship, into leadership, into relationships, into ministry — without declaring your condition first. You are sitting in positions of spiritual authority with unexamined, unconfessed spiritual leprosy that is imperceptibly but relentlessly spreading its influence to those around you. God is calling you today to the kind of radical, courageous honesty that the leper's law required. Not shame — not a public spectacle — but the honest acknowledgment before God and a trusted witness that produces the conditions for real, lasting healing. Are you clean, or are you covered?
