Crucified With Christ—Alive in Faith

THE WORD

Crucified. Paul does not say improved, upgraded, refined, or redirected. He says crucified. The cross is not a metaphor for self-improvement. It is the instrument of death — the complete, irreversible termination of the life that was there before. When Paul says “I have been crucified with Christ,” he is declaring that the old self — the self-directed, ego-driven, autonomy-asserting Paul who ran his own agenda and answered to no one but himself — is dead. Not managed. Not under construction. Dead. The crucifixion he describes is past tense and completed: “I have been crucified.” It is a done transaction. And the life that now occupies the space where the old Paul used to live is not a rehabilitated version of Paul. It is Christ Himself, living through Paul’s body by faith. This is the radical, total, world-reversing reality of what happened to you at salvation. The question is whether you are living in it. You attend identity conferences and memorize declarations about who you are in Christ.

You know the verses — chosen, royal priesthood, joint heir, more than conqueror, new creation. And then you walk out of the conference, drive home, and proceed to make every major decision of your life from the throne of self. Your agenda. Your plan. Your preferences. Your comfort. Your timeline. Your ambition. The “I” Paul describes — the self-sovereign, self-referential, self-protective ego — is thoroughly alive in your daily life and is running the operation with tremendous efficiency. You have been attending identity conferences to discover who you are in Christ while the person who was supposed to be dead at the cross is still alive, still in charge, and still making all the decisions. That is not an identity problem. That is a crucifixion problem. The cross was not applied. Galatians 2:20 is not aspirational language for the spiritually elite. It is the baseline description of what happened to every person who truly came to Christ. “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” The grammar is present active — ongoing, continuous, current. Christ is currently living in you.

CONFRONTATION QUESTION

In the actual daily operation of your life — your decisions, your relationships, your reactions, your ambitions — who is sitting on the throne: the crucified self that was supposed to stay dead, or the Christ who was supposed to be living in you?

FAITH RESPONSE

I receive the truth that I have been crucified with Christ, and I will live like it. The old self — self-directed, ego-driven, autonomy-asserting, and throne-seeking — is dead. I refuse to resurrect what God put on the cross. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. Every decision of this day will be made from that reality. I am not self-managed. I am Christ-inhabited. And the life I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Prayer

Father, I confess that I have been living from the throne of self while professing the death of self. I have spoken the language of crucifixion while protecting the ego. Apply the cross again today — deeply, thoroughly, specifically. Let the old “I” die: my agenda, my preferences, my need for control, my self-protective instincts, my ambitions that have not been surrendered to You. Let Christ actually live in me — not as a resident I consult occasionally but as the one who governs every movement of my life.

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT

Truth must become practice.

Identify one specific area where the old self is still sitting on the throne — one decision, relationship, habit, or ambition that you have not genuinely submitted to the lordship of Christ. Today, physically kneel (or bow your head), name that specific thing aloud to God, and surrender it. Not as a feeling. As a declared, intentional act of crucifixion. Write the date. This is the day that thing died.
