Entrust the Faith to People Who Will Teach Others

The discipleship model Paul describes in 2 Timothy 2:2 is not a program — it is a chain. Paul to Timothy: that is one generation. Timothy to faithful men: that is two generations. Faithful men to others also: that is three and four generations. The investment was never meant to rest in any single person as a recipient. It was designed to flow through people — from one life into another, generation after generation, until the gospel had reached the ends of the earth. Every teaching Paul gave to Timothy was given with the expectation that Timothy would transmit it to someone who would transmit it to someone else. The chain was the strategy. The chain was the plan. And the chain functions only as long as every link in it receives AND transmits. The moment someone becomes an endpoint — a terminal recipient who takes in and never passes on — the chain breaks. And someone, somewhere, remains unreached because the transmission stopped. You are somewhere in this chain.

You have received. Probably extensively. You have been discipled — formally or informally — by pastors, teachers, mentors, parents, and the accumulated spiritual investment of people who poured into your life. You have sat under preaching, attended conferences, consumed podcasts, read books, participated in small groups, and received the investment of people who believed in your potential and gave their time and wisdom to develop it. The question Paul’s model raises — the direct, uncomfortable, accountable question — is not whether you have received. You have. The question is: to whom are you transmitting? Who are the specific, named, intentionally invested faithful people in your life to whom you are entrusting what you have received, specifically so that they can teach others also? If your answer is no one — not a vague acquaintance you occasionally encourage, not a ministry audience you speak to from a platform, but specific individuals you are intentionally, consistently, transferably discipling in the Paul-to-Timothy sense — the chain is broken at your link. The modern church has produced excellent consumers of discipleship and a severe shortage of producers of it.
