THE WORD
The gray in your hair is not just a sign of age — it is a repository of experience that the body of Christ desperately needs and is not receiving because you have never made the deliberate choice to invest it. You have walked through the wilderness and come out the other side. You have made the marriage work through the decade where it almost didn't. You have navigated the ministry betrayal and stayed true to God. You have rebuilt after the financial collapse. You have buried a child and still chosen faith. You have wrestled with chronic illness and found the grace of God sufficient in it. You have learned — at significant personal cost — what the younger believer sitting three rows ahead of you in church is about to learn the hard way, because no one with your experience has sat down and spoken into their life. That gap is not their fault.
It is the failure of the mature believer to see the responsibility embedded in their experience. Your history with God is not just your testimony — it is someone else's road map. Paul's design for the church in Titus 2 is deliberate, structured, and intergenerational. He does not simply command that older believers be good examples — though that is included. He specifically commands that they train. The Greek word sophronizō means to bring to soundness of mind, to train toward wisdom and self-control, to restore to sanity through the investment of accumulated understanding. This is not casual conversation. This is not occasional encouragement when paths cross. This is intentional, relational, consistent investment over time — the older believer sitting down with the younger believer and transmitting what has been learned through years of following God, not to spare them all pain, but to spare them unnecessary pain. The mentor does not replace God as the teacher — God remains the Teacher. But God uses human vessels of seasoned experience as the delivery mechanism for wisdom that books and sermons alone cannot fully convey. You are a vessel.
CONFRONTATION QUESTION
Who is in your sphere of influence right now who is at a stage of life — spiritually, relationally, vocationally — where the wisdom you have accumulated through your own journey could spare them significant pain, and what has stopped you from investing in that person intentionally and consistently?
