Fear Is Not An Excuse To Abandon The Assignment

The enemy had a strategy: make them afraid. Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem mocked, then threatened, then conspired, then gathered armies — all with the singular purpose of causing the builders to drop their tools and go home. And for a moment, it was working. The people were saying, “There is too much rubble. We are not able to rebuild.” The fear was real. The opposition was organized. The threat was credible. And Nehemiah’s response was not a military address — it was a theological one. “Do not be afraid of them.” Why not? “Remember the LORD, who is great and awesome.” The antidote to fear is not courage. The antidote to fear is remembrance — deliberate, specific, active remembrance of who God is.

Fear paralyzes God-given assignments. This is not a new strategy — it is the oldest one in the enemy’s playbook. He said to Adam and Eve, “Did God really say...?” He said to the ten spies, “the giants are too big.” He said to Saul’s army, “Goliath is too strong.” He says to you today, “the opposition is too organized, the odds are too long, the rubble is too deep, the enemies are too powerful, and you are not equipped for this.” And if you listen to that voice long enough, you will drop your trowel. You will stop building. You will go back to the safety of the familiar — and the wall will remain broken. And the enemy will have won without ever raising a sword.

Notice what Nehemiah told the people to fight for: brothers, sons, daughters, wives, homes. He made the assignment personal. He reminded them that what was at stake was not an abstract project — it was the safety of their families, the future of their children, the protection of everything they loved. When you forget why you are building, the fear of the opposition becomes louder than the love of the people you are building for. What are you building for? Who are your brothers, your sons, your daughters? What is the assignment that, if you abandon it in fear, will leave them exposed to the enemy? Let the answer to those questions reignite the fire that the fear tried to extinguish.

Nehemiah’s builders held a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other. They built and they guarded simultaneously. They did not stop building because the threat was real — they adapted their approach and continued. This is the final word of Batch 2: continue. Do not be afraid of them. Remember the LORD, who is great and awesome. Pick up your trowel. Pick up your sword. Fight for what God has called you to build. The wall will be finished. The assignment will be completed. The enemy will not have the last word. The LORD is great and awesome — and He is with you.
