God Is Not Finished with You — Stop Writing Your Own Eulogy

Paul writes this from a prison cell. Let that land. He is chained, confined, awaiting a verdict that could mean his execution — and he writes with the settled, unshakeable certainty of a man who has seen God complete what He starts. "I am sure of this" — in the Greek, pepoithōs, the perfect participle of peithō, meaning fully persuaded, completely convinced, resting in confident certainty. This is not optimistic cheerleading. This is theological bedrock. Paul is not speculating that God might see your story through. He is declaring, from the unshaken foundation of the character of God, that the One who initiated your story will complete it. The Author does not abandon manuscripts. The Architect does not leave buildings half-constructed. The God who chose you before the foundation of the world is not going to stop working in you because your chapter looked too messy in the middle.

You need to hear this, because somewhere along the way — through repeated failure, through prolonged waiting, through seasons where the silence of God felt like the absence of God, through the verdict of people who wrote you off — you have started to agree with the eulogy. You have started narrating your own story in past tense. You have taken the accumulation of your worst moments and constructed from them a verdict: that you have disqualified yourself, that your window has closed, that someone else has been called up to fill the position you forfeited. And you have dressed that self-verdict in the language of humility to make it sound spiritual — when in reality it is unbelief wearing a modest costume. Declaring yourself done before God is done with you is not humility. It is a direct contradiction of this verse.

The word "completion" in the Greek is epiteleō — to fully accomplish, to carry through to the finish line. The same God who authored your beginning has already written your completion. He wrote it before you were born (Psalm 139:16). He is working all things — including your failures, your detours, your broken seasons, and your prolonged waiting rooms — together for good (Romans 8:28). You do not get to declare the manuscript finished before the Author does. Stop rehearsing your failures as your final chapter. Stop allowing the opinions of people who got bored with your middle chapters to define your ending. Stop mistaking a painful process for an abandoned project. God is still writing. The pen is still moving. And the day of Jesus Christ — the completion date — has not yet arrived. Until it does, God is still at work in you. Cooperate with what He is doing. Stop writing your eulogy. The story is not over.
