Hear, O Israel

THE WORD

The Shema — the foundational confession of the Jewish faith, recited twice daily for three thousand years — begins with one word: Hear. Not "believe." Not "declare." Not "attend services." Hear. There is a hearing that is more than audio reception — it is the Hebrew concept of shema, which means to hear and to obey, to receive and to respond, to understand and to submit. When God says "Hear, O Israel," He is not asking for your attention — He is demanding your submission. He is saying: take what I am about to say and let it reorganize every priority, every allegiance, every aspect of your existence. To truly hear the Shema is to be changed by it.

The LORD our God is one. Not one among many. Not the greatest of several options. One. Singular. Incomparable. Undivided. And therefore the response to this God cannot be divided either. You cannot give God your Sundays and give the rest of the week to your own agenda. You cannot give Him your worship music and give your decision-making to your emotions. You cannot give Him your tithe and give your financial strategy to the spirit of mammon. The oneness of God demands the wholeness of your devotion. "All thine heart, all thy soul, all thy might." Three totalities. Zero negotiation. This is what love for the one God looks like — not the residual, leftover devotion after everything else has been served, but the primary, organizing, total commitment of every faculty, every resource, every capacity you possess.

Jesus declared this the greatest commandment. When asked, He did not choose from the 613 Torah commandments with a strategic calculation. He went immediately to the Shema — because every other commandment flows from or is contained within this one. If you love God with your whole heart, soul, and might, you will not steal, because you will not want what is not yours. You will not commit adultery, because you will not trade the glory of God's presence for a moment of fleshly gratification. You will not lie, because you will not dishonor the God of truth with your mouth. Wholehearted love for God is the engine that powers every other commandment. Without it, obedience is performance. With it, obedience is worship.

So hear this, today: How divided is your heart? What holds competing allegiance with God for the throne of your devotion? What are you loving with the might — the power, the resources, the energy — that belongs to God alone? The Shema is not a prayer to recite. It is a reality to live. And living it means that every morning, before the phone is checked, before the agenda is opened, before the world demands your attention, you recalibrate your entire being toward the One God who alone deserves all of you. Hear, O reader. The LORD your God is one LORD. Now love Him like it.
