Song of Solomon reaches its crescendo in a celebration of covenant love between human lovers. Love is strong as death, fierce in devotion, unquenchable by many waters, and beyond purchase by wealth.
The phrase ‘the very flame of the LORD’ may express an intense or divine-like flame, but the passage should not be flattened into a direct statement that God’s love is violent. Violence and coercion are not holy proofs of love.
Within the canon, faithful covenant love can point beyond itself toward God’s steadfast love, but that theological connection must respect the poem’s original human context. Christian love protects, honors consent, tells truth, refuses exploitation, and cannot be purchased as a commodity.
Receive love as gift and practice it as covenant faithfulness. Do not confuse jealousy with control, intensity with safety, or sacrifice with the destruction of boundaries. Strong love remains truthful, mutual, and committed to the good of the beloved.
