THE WORD
Matthew 5:6 blesses those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Within the Beatitudes, the image speaks of deep longing for what is right before God. Jesus promises satisfaction; He does not offer a scorecard of devotional intensity.
Peinaō means to hunger. The image should not be stretched into a rule that exhaustion, constant religious activity, or dramatic emotion qualifies someone for grace. Righteousness is more than consuming spiritual material: the Sermon on the Mount addresses the life lived before God and neighbor.
Examine desires and practices together. Seek God in prayer and Scripture, and put justice, mercy, and truth into action. If desire feels faint, bring that honestly to Him. Responsible rest and care can support discipleship rather than weaken it.

- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
