Remain Within the Teaching of Christ

teaching or doctrine. Spiritual progress is faithful only when it remains accountable to the apostolic witness to Jesus Christ.

THE WORD

The most dangerous false teacher is not the one who denies the Gospel outright. That person is easily identified and dismissed. The most dangerous false teacher — and the most seduced congregation — is the one who begins with the Gospel and then presents themselves as having moved beyond it into something more evolved, more relevant, more culturally sophisticated, more inclusive, or more spiritually advanced. John has a specific word for this movement in 2 John 1:9, and the word is stark: "goes on ahead." The Greek is proagōn — to lead ahead, to go forward, to advance past a fixed point. On the surface this sounds like progress. In John's framework it is catastrophic departure. To go ahead of — to advance beyond — the teaching of Christ is not spiritual evolution. It is apostasy. The teaching of Christ is not a starting block from which the mature believer eventually sprints away. It is the permanent, fixed, final, authoritative boundary of everything that can legitimately be called Christian.

Anything built outside that boundary is not an advanced form of Christianity. It is not Christianity at all. John's verdict on the person who goes ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ is absolute: they "do not have God." Not a lesser form of God. Not a more culturally relevant God. Not God. The platform may be enormous. The following may be global. The theology may be sophisticated and attractively articulated. The emotional experience in the room may be intense. But if the teaching has stepped outside the doctrine of Christ — if it has modified, relativized, reframed, or quietly discarded the exclusive claims, the moral demands, the substitutionary atonement, the bodily resurrection, or the final judgment of the Christ of the Scriptures — then whatever is happening in that room, God is not there. You can have a conference without God. You can have an experience without God. You can have a community without God. You can build a brand, fill a building, and generate revenue — without God.

Is there any teaching you have embraced, any preacher you have followed, or any spiritual community you have been part of that has — in the name of relevance, progress, or inclusivity — moved beyond the fixed, authoritative teaching of Christ in its doctrine or its ethics?

FAITH RESPONSE

I receive the truth that I abide in the teaching of Christ. I do not go ahead. I do not evolve past the fixed, final, authoritative Word of the Son of God. By the authority of what is written, I stay — I build inside the boundary, I preach inside the doctrine, I live inside the truth that Christ has delivered. And because I abide in His teaching, I have both the Father and the Son. That is enough. That is everything. I need no progressive update on the eternal truth of Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Father, I confess that I have sometimes been seduced by teaching that felt spiritually advanced but had quietly stepped outside the boundary of Christ's doctrine, and I repent of the doctrinal carelessness that left me vulnerable to that seduction. Anchor me today in the teaching of Christ — unmodified, uncompromised, and unashamed. Make me a person who abides — who stays inside, who builds inside, who never mistakes cultural relevance for spiritual progress. Guard my doctrine as You guard my soul.

Evaluate the primary teaching sources in your life — the preachers, podcasts, books, and online ministries you regularly consume. Ask one question about each: "Does this consistently abide in the teaching of Christ as revealed in Scripture, or does it regularly go beyond or modify it?" Make a deliberate decision today about what you will continue to receive and what must be set aside.
