Jonah prays from the fish after being thrown into the sea. His poem remembers temple, drowning, mercy, and vow. The fish becomes an instrument of preservation, but the text does not say God must place every person inside a catastrophe to get attention.
Distress can result from our choices, another person’s harm, natural danger, injustice, illness, or reasons we cannot explain. We should not tell sufferers that God designed the belly they are in. We can still confess with Jonah that rescue ultimately belongs to the LORD.
Prayer inside crisis may include thanksgiving, lament, emergency action, treatment, reporting danger, and asking others for help. God’s mercy is not a demand to call the crisis good; it is hope that the crisis does not own the final word.
