Test Your Work Without Ranking Your Life

The comparison trap is one of the most effective tools the enemy uses against believers today — not because it introduces false doctrine or promotes blatant sin, but because it is so perfectly engineered to keep you so focused on someone else's race that you stop running your own. Every time you look at what another ministry is doing and feel inferior. Every time you look at someone else's marriage, their children, their income, their following, their platform, their timeline — and measure what God is doing in your life against what He is doing in theirs — you are doing exactly what Paul says not to do. You are leaning your reason to stand on your neighbor's performance rather than on your own faithfulness to what God specifically assigned to you. And the result is always the same: either pride, because you conclude you are ahead of them, or despair, because you conclude you are behind.

Both conclusions miss the point entirely because they are measuring against the wrong standard. Paul says "let each one test his own work." The word for test is dokimazō — to examine, to approve through testing, to prove genuine through scrutiny. This is not the soft self-assessment of a casual glance in the mirror. It is the serious, honest, Spirit-led examination of whether your work — your specific assignment, your particular calling, your God-given stewardship in this specific season — is being executed faithfully. That examination has only one valid comparison point: what God asked of you. Not what He asked of your colleague. Not what He asked of the pastor with the larger church. Not what He asked of the believer with the bigger platform. What He asked of you. And you can only know whether you are faithful to that if you have been in close enough conversation with God about what "that" actually is — which is precisely the thing the comparison habit is designed to prevent.

Comparison can distort calling, but unequal opportunity and injustice are real. Self-examination should not erase discrimination, disability, poverty, or the help people need. Test your work honestly while honoring different capacities, seasons, responsibilities, and forms of fruit that may never become publicly visible.
