Unity Must Be Holy, Truthful, and Just

David’s declaration in Psalm 133 is not merely a poetic observation about how nice harmony feels. It is a theological statement about where the supernatural activity of God is commanded. The psalm continues: “For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore” (Psalm 133:3). There — in the place of unity, in the dwelling of brothers together in genuine, costly, maintained unity — is where God commands the blessing. Not requests it. Not suggests it. Commands it. He places a divine command over the location of unity, and the blessing flows by command. Which means that when the body of Christ is fragmented — when believers are divided by offense, by competition, by theological tribalism, by personality conflict, by jealousy of gifting, by institutional rivalry — the location where God commands the blessing is absent, and the blessing is withheld accordingly. The body’s power is directly tied to the body’s unity. And you may be the one breaking it. The church wonders why revival tarries.

Prayer meetings are held for breakthrough. Fasting events are organized for spiritual awakening. Leaders gather for summit conversations about kingdom advancement. And nothing shifts — because the fundamental prerequisite of Psalm 133 is not being met. The brothers are not dwelling in unity. They are dwelling in managed distance, in polite institutional co-existence, in the mutual agreement to never directly challenge the competition and rivalry that is operating beneath the surface. That is not unity. Unity is not the absence of conflict — it is the shared commitment to relationship and mission that refuses to let conflict become division. It is the willingness to humble yourself, confront the offense, restore the relationship, and keep the covenant of brotherhood intact at personal cost. Without that willingness, the blessing remains commanded but unlocated — there is no “there” for it to land. You are somewhere in this picture.

Biblical unity is not uniformity, image management, or silence around wrongdoing. Peace that depends on concealing abuse or excluding honest questions is counterfeit. The Spirit forms unity through shared allegiance to Christ, truth, repentance, justice, patient disagreement, and protection of vulnerable people. Sometimes naming a fracture is the first faithful step toward genuine reconciliation.
