Job tore his robe, shaved his head, fell to the ground, and worshiped. His response held grief and reverence together. Scripture does not present him as emotionally untouched; the book preserves chapters of lament, protest, confusion, and longing.
Worship is not a payment we give God for favorable circumstances, but neither is grief a failure to worship. Tears, silence, questions, and lament can be faithful ways of remaining before God when praise feels difficult.
Job’s words reflect his understanding in the first shock of loss; the book later complicates every simple explanation of suffering. We should not tell grieving people that God personally took each loved one or that visible composure proves mature faith.
Bring God the whole truth. Receive companionship, pastoral care, counseling, medical support, and time. Worship can bless God’s name while refusing to lie about the wound.
