Do Not Despise What God Entrusted

Word StudyBāzâ means to despise, hold in contempt, or treat as insignificant. Esau treated the birthright lightly, while the narrative also refuses to make Jacob’s exploitation of hunger a model of wisdom.
THE DEVOTION
Esau returned exhausted and asked for Jacob’s stew. The narrative says he despised his birthright—not because food is evil, but because he treated a lasting covenant privilege as though it were worth no more than one urgent appetite.
The story also reveals Jacob’s opportunism. Wisdom does not celebrate a brother exploiting another person’s vulnerability. Scripture confronts both contempt for what is entrusted and manipulation that turns need into leverage.
Consequences can outlast a moment, but the title ‘sold forever’ goes too far. The gospel does not teach that one impulsive decision places a repentant person beyond mercy. Repentance may not erase every consequence, yet grace still opens a truthful future.
When appetite is loud, slow the decision. Eat, rest, seek counsel, review the covenant, and refuse to make permanent choices from a depleted body or panicked mind. Also refuse to profit from another person’s hunger. Steward what lasts, and practice mercy toward those in need.
