Grace for the Gap: When You Are Not Yet Who You Are Becoming

There is a difficult distance between conversion and maturity. We know what Christ has called us to become, yet we still encounter habits, reactions, fears, and wounds that testify that the work is unfinished. That gap can become fertile ground for condemnation. We begin to treat incompleteness as evidence that God has abandoned the project.

Paul answers that fear with confidence—not confidence in human consistency, but in God’s faithfulness. The Greek verb epiteleō means to carry something through to its intended completion. God does not begin redemptive construction merely to leave scaffolding around a permanently abandoned life. What He initiates in grace, He continues by grace.

Yet grace is not divine permission to remain unchanged. The same grace that comforts us in weakness confronts our excuses. It teaches us to repent, practice obedience, receive correction, and participate in the Spirit’s forming work. We cannot complete ourselves, but we can resist the means through which God matures us.

Do not confuse a slow process with an absent God. Some transformation occurs beneath the surface before visible fruit appears. Roots deepen before branches spread. At the same time, do not call repeated avoidance a process when God has already made the next act of obedience clear. Grace supplies patience, but it also produces movement.

Stand honestly in the gap. Refuse both shame and complacency. Thank God for what has changed, confess what still requires surrender, and take the next faithful step. You are not yet everything you will become—but the unfinished places are still in the hands of the One who knows how to complete what He began.
