Sowing Is Not Karma

Word StudyMuktērizō means to mock or turn up the nose in contempt. Paul insists that God cannot be mocked; the warning concerns moral formation and persevering good, not karma or a tool for blaming sufferers.
THE DEVOTION
Paul warns that God is not mocked: what a person sows, that person will also reap. The context contrasts sowing to the flesh with sowing to the Spirit and leads directly into a call not to grow weary in doing good.
This is moral formation, not karma or a mechanical explanation for every circumstance. People suffer because of another person’s violence, unjust systems, illness, disaster, trauma, or mysteries they did not plant. We must never use this proverb-like truth to blame victims.
Choices still form habits and communities. Deception erodes trust; generosity strengthens fellowship; repeated contempt wounds a home; patient truth can cultivate repair. Grace forgives sin and also teaches a new pattern of sowing.
Examine the seeds in your hand without pretending you control the weather. Repent where needed, repair what can be repaired, help tend fields damaged by others, and keep doing good. The harvest belongs to God; faithful sowing belongs to us.
