The Door That Mercy Closed
Not every closed door is rejection; some are the architecture of divine protection.

THE DEVOTION
We celebrate open doors because access feels like favor. Closed doors feel more difficult to interpret. When an opportunity disappears, a relationship ends, or a carefully built plan refuses to move, disappointment can quickly become theological suspicion: if God loved me, surely He would have let me through.
Revelation presents Christ as the One who opens and shuts with final authority. The verb kleiō means to close. This sovereignty does not make every obstacle a secret message, nor does it excuse laziness when persistence is required. It does mean human resistance cannot cancel what Christ truly appoints—and human desire cannot sanctify what He refuses.
Some doors close because the timing is wrong. Others close because the room beyond them would deform the person we are becoming. We may be praying for access to a table where our conviction would eventually become the admission price. Mercy sees the compromise while desire sees only the opportunity.
Discernment requires more than romanticizing rejection. Sometimes a door is closed because preparation is incomplete, communication failed, or injustice must be challenged. Pray, learn, improve, and knock where wisdom permits. But when the answer remains no, do not destroy your peace trying to pick a lock Christ has not given you.
Release the door without calling your future closed. The same hand that denies one entrance governs every other opening. What feels like limitation may be divine architecture redirecting your life away from a room too small, too early, or too costly for your calling.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
