The LORD Looks on the Heart

THE DEVOTION

Samuel saw Eliab’s height and assumed he had found Israel’s next king. God interrupted the conclusion. Human beings naturally read surfaces: appearance, charisma, confidence, credentials, age, wealth, disability, accent, and public reputation. None provides complete access to the heart.

David’s selection does not mean outward conduct is irrelevant. Scripture later records both his faith and his grievous sins. God’s knowledge of the heart is not a slogan that shields leaders from accountability. Hidden motives belong to God, while observable fruit, truthfulness, competence, and safeguarding still matter in communal discernment.

The verse also confronts prejudice. Bodies are not moral evidence. Beauty does not prove virtue; disability does not signal deficiency; age and stature do not reveal calling. Churches honor God’s vision when they remove unnecessary barriers and make room for faithful people whom familiar standards overlook.

Tending the heart means more than polishing private feelings. Desire is formed through worship, habits, relationships, repentance, and choices made when applause is absent. Ask God to expose envy, ambition, contempt, and fear before they are disguised beneath a gifted exterior.

If you have been overlooked, do not turn David’s story into a guarantee of promotion. Let it free you to serve faithfully without making human recognition your god. If you select leaders, slow down. Look beyond presentation, invite diverse wisdom, examine fruit, and remain correctable before the One who sees more clearly than any panel.
