Word StudyYirʾâ means fear, awe, or reverence. In Proverbs it names humble accountability before the LORD—the beginning that makes knowledge teachable and moral, not terror manufactured for control.
THE DEVOTION
Proverbs opens by declaring that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. The Hebrew yirah can carry fear, awe, and reverence. In this wisdom setting, it is not terror that drives us from God but sober recognition of who God is and who we are before Him.
Reverence refuses both arrogance and anti-intellectualism. Proverbs honors observation, instruction, skill, correction, planning, and counsel. The mind becomes wise when knowledge is placed beneath truth, love, justice, and accountability to the Creator.
Fear-based control is not the fear of the LORD. Leaders must not manufacture dread to secure obedience, and trauma responses should not be praised as spirituality. Godly reverence protects dignity, welcomes truthful questions, and remains correctable.
Begin again at the proper center. Study carefully. Verify facts. Receive correction. Pray humbly. Let every degree, gift, opinion, and platform bow before the character of God. Knowledge becomes wisdom when reverence governs how it is used.
