Word StudyAgorazō means to purchase, often in a marketplace. Paul uses redemption language to establish freedom from enslaving powers and belonging to Christ—not to reduce human dignity to a commercial price.
THE DEVOTION
Paul tells the Corinthian church that the body matters to God. In a culture that separated spiritual claims from bodily conduct, he grounds holiness in resurrection, the Spirit’s presence, and belonging to Christ.
‘Bought with a price’ describes redemption, not human worth measured by commerce. Christ’s self-giving love does not make believers disposable property. It frees us from enslaving powers and calls the whole person—body, desire, relationship, and choice—into holy stewardship.
The immediate context addresses sexual ethics, but embodied faith also includes rest, nutrition, medical care, safety, consent, disability, recovery, and freedom from shame. The body is neither an idol nor an enemy. It is a creaturely gift awaiting resurrection.
Glorify God in your body by refusing both exploitation and contempt. Seek wise care, honor covenant commitments, establish protective boundaries, repent of harm, and receive grace. Holiness is not disgust with the body; it is the body restored to loving allegiance under Christ.
