Your Feelings Are Real, but They Are Not the Final Authority

Emotions carry information and deserve care, yet Scripture, evidence, wisdom, and responsible support help interpret what feelings cannot decide alone.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)

WISDOM WHISPERS™

Feelings are real experiences, but real is not the same as infallible. Mature faith listens to emotion without handing it the throne.
— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.

Word Studycrooked, deceptive, or difficult to trace. Jeremiah confronts self-trust apart from God; the passage is not permission to despise emotion or ignore mental-health care.

THE DEVOTION

Jeremiah says something about the human heart that our entire culture has decided to ignore: 'The heart is deceitful above all things.' The word is aqob — crooked, treacherous, bent, deceptive. And this collides head-on with the reigning philosophy of our age: 'follow your heart,' 'trust your feelings,' 'if it feels right, it is right.' We have crowned feelings as the ultimate authority — the guide to identity, morality, and truth. And Scripture warns that we have enthroned the one thing least qualified to rule.

Now hear this clearly, because it's easy to misunderstand: your feelings are REAL. God made you an emotional being, and your feelings matter, deserve to be acknowledged, and often carry important information. This is not a call to suppress or ignore them. But real is not the same as reliable. A feeling can be completely genuine and completely wrong at the same time. Fear feels real when there's no danger. Shame feels real when there's no guilt. Attraction feels real toward what would destroy you. The feeling is authentic; its testimony is not always true.

So the question is not whether to have feelings, but whether to let them rule. 🏿 Feelings make wonderful passengers and terrible drivers. When feelings are Lord, you are at the mercy of every mood, every impulse, every emotional weather system that blows through — and a deceitful heart is steering your whole life. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ says it plainly: your feelings deserve a voice, but they do not deserve the throne.

Jeremiah is exposing self-trust apart from God, not teaching that every emotion is false or shameful. Anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and other conditions cannot be reduced to a failure of lordship. Feelings may need prayer, rest, evidence, conversation, therapy, medication, or medical evaluation. Discernment listens carefully before it decides what response is wise.
