Your Truth Doesn’t Overrule The Truth

The phrase ‘my truth’ can name something legitimate: this is my experience, my memory, or my testimony. No one should dismiss another person’s pain simply because it is inconvenient. Yet experience and truth are not identical. Two contradictory claims cannot both describe reality accurately in the same sense at the same time.

Jesus makes a staggering claim. He does not say that He possesses one helpful perspective among many. He says, ‘I am the truth.’ The Greek word alētheia points to reality brought into the open. Christian faith therefore does not begin with autonomous selves creating meaning; it begins with Christ revealing God and confronting every culture, church, and individual.

Objective truth must not become an excuse for arrogance. Finite believers can misunderstand Scripture, confuse tradition with revelation, and defend opinions as though God personally signed them. Submission to truth includes careful interpretation, teachability, historical awareness, honest evidence, and willingness to be corrected.

Relativism becomes dangerous when personal preference is granted immunity from examination. But authoritarian religion is equally dangerous when leaders call their preferences absolute and punish every question. Jesus is the Truth; none of us is. That distinction makes bold conviction and deep humility belong together.

Truth also requires us to respect the different kinds of questions we ask. Scripture reveals God and governs faithfulness; careful observation helps us describe the created world; testimony reports lived experience; history examines evidence and context. Conflict often grows when one kind of claim is forced to answer a question it was never designed to settle. Wisdom seeks coherence without manipulating any witness.

Bring your strongest belief into the light. Ask whether it is rooted in Scripture read responsibly, strengthened by evidence, consistent with Christ’s character, and open to wise correction. Truth does not fear investigation. It frees us from the exhausting task of becoming our own god while protecting us from surrendering conscience to someone else’s ego.
