While the Sower Sleeps

You were sent to sow. The sprouting was never your assignment.

THE SCRIPTURAL LENS

“He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.”
Mark 4:27–28 · ESV
αὐτομάτηGreek · automatē

THE WORD BENEATH THE IMAGEBy itself; of its own accord, without visible human cause. The same word opens Peter’s prison gate in Acts 12:10.

“The sower who cannot sleep has mistaken his assignment for God’s.”
— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.

In Jesus’ parable, the man scatters seed, then sleeps and rises, night after night. The seed sprouts and grows, and he cannot explain how. The earth produces by itself: blade, then ear, then full grain. The growth unfolds on a schedule he never wrote.

The parable describes the kingdom of God, and our application must stay inside that boundary. Growth in God’s work belongs to God. The sower’s labor is still real: he scatters the seed, and when the grain is ripe, he puts in the sickle. What he cannot do is command the sprouting.

Some of us have sown faithfully into a child, a congregation, or a friendship, and now we lie awake digging up the seed to check on it. Sow what God placed in your hand. Then sleep. The ground answers to a Word you cannot hear.
