Haggai speaks to Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the remnant discouraged by comparison with the former temple. ‘Be strong … work, for I am with you’ joins responsible labor to covenant presence.
The command does not make work a cure for anxiety, depression, disability, burnout, or grief. Strength may include rest, treatment, accommodations, delegation, counsel, and accepting that capacity differs.
God’s presence frees the community from paralysis and from frantic self-reliance. Do the work actually entrusted, with the resources and people God provides, without demanding that present beginnings look like remembered glory.
