Draw Near to the Throne of Grace

THE WORD

On the day Jesus died, the veil in the Temple was torn — from top to bottom. Not from the bottom up, as a human hand would tear it. From top to bottom, as the hand of God tears what God alone has the authority to tear. That thick, heavy curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place — the veil that represented the absolute inaccessibility of God's presence to sinful humanity — was torn permanently, publicly, and irreversibly by God Himself at the moment of His Son's death. The way is open. The barrier is gone. The way into the holiest of all has been consecrated through the blood of Jesus. And Hebrews 4:16 is the invitation that was written in that blood: draw near. With confidence. To the throne of grace. Right now. The door is not just unlocked — it has been removed from its hinges. And yet you hover at the threshold.

You approach God apologetically, hesitantly, from a distance, unsure of your welcome, uncertain of your standing, treating the presence of God as a sacred space you are barely permitted to visit rather than a throne room you are invited to inhabit. The word translated "confidence" in this verse is the Greek parrēsia — it means boldness, freedom of speech, the right and ability to speak openly without restraint. This is the word used for the confidence of a citizen before a just ruler. It is the posture of a child before a loving father. It is the access of someone who belongs, not someone who is tolerated. This is not arrogance — it is covenant. Jesus purchased this access. Every drop of His blood said: you belong in this room. You are welcome here. You are known here and you are loved here.

Confidence is not entitlement, volume, or leverage over God. Through the sympathetic High Priest we bring fear, grief, temptation, confusion, and need without pretending. Mercy may arrive through endurance, correction, community, treatment, changed circumstances, or an answer different from the one requested. The throne is not a vending machine; it is covenant access to reigning mercy through Christ.

Father, let Hebrews 4:16 search us truthfully. Correct our sin without making us careless with another person’s dignity or safety. Form in us the faithfulness of Christ, give us wise counsel, and lead us into concrete obedience shaped by love, justice, humility, and responsible care.
