Drift Happens Quietly—Pay Closer Attention

There is a deception so subtle that most believers never detect it until they are already far downstream — and that deception is called drift. You are not in open rebellion. You have not rejected God. You have not stood up in church and declared that you are done. You are drifting. And drifting is more dangerous than rebellion precisely because it is silent. The rebel knows he has left. The drifter believes he is still where he was. The Greek word used here for "drift" is pararrhyō — a nautical term for a ship that has slipped its mooring and is being carried away by wind and current. Nobody watches a ship and thinks, "That vessel is under intelligent direction." It is simply being moved by whatever force surrounds it. That is your spiritual life right now, if you are honest. The current is moving you. The entertainment culture is moving you. Your comfort preferences are moving you. Your exhaustion is moving you.

And the tragedy is that you have called it rest. The writer of Hebrews is not speaking to pagans. He is speaking to people who have heard — who have received the word, who know the Gospel, who have tasted the heavenly gift. And he says to those very people: you must pay much closer attention, or you will drift. Closer attention than what? Closer attention than you currently are. That means the writer is assuming that wherever you are in your attention to the Word of God, it is not enough. You need to draw closer. You need to pay more deliberate, more focused, more costly attention. Nobody drifts toward God. That is the law of spiritual physics that the entire Bible confirms. Left to yourself — left to the natural current of the fallen world — you will move away from God. Every. Single. Time. If you are not actively, deliberately, effortfully pressing toward Him — you are drifting. There is no spiritual neutral gear. Think about what drift looks like in real time.
