Even The Donkey Heard God

THE WORD

God used a donkey to speak to a prophet. Let that settle. Not an angel. Not a burning bush. Not thunder from heaven. A donkey. And here is the humiliating part: the donkey could see what the prophet could not. The angel of the LORD stood in the road with a drawn sword — visible to the animal, invisible to the man who claimed to speak for God. Balaam had been on a path of compromise, a journey commissioned for profit, and the angel was blocking it. The donkey turned away three times. Balaam beat her three times. And finally, the animal turned around and asked: "What have I done to you that you have beaten me three times?" And then — and then — God opened Balaam's eyes and he finally saw what his donkey had seen all along.

The spiritual application is inescapable and deeply uncomfortable: there are people whose discernment is more advanced than yours. There are moments when the "simple" person in the room — the one you overlook, the one you are inclined to beat out of your way — is seeing the angel that your pride and your compromise have blinded you to. Balaam was a prophet. He was on speaking terms with the Almighty. He had heard God's voice. But the greed in his heart had created such a spiritual blindness that a donkey had to intervene to save his life. What is the thing in your heart right now — the greed, the ambition, the offense, the compromise — that has blinded you to the warnings God is sending through the most unexpected messengers?

God will use anything and anyone to get your attention when you are headed in the wrong direction. He will use the child in your home who asks the question that cuts right to the heart of your hypocrisy. He will use a song on the radio, a text from an old friend, a sermon you did not want to hear, a physical ailment that forces you to stop. He will open the mouth of whatever donkey is available — because His mercy will not let you walk into the sword of the angel without first sending you a warning. The question is whether you will beat the messenger or listen to them. Balaam finally listened. But only after three beatings and a talking donkey. How long before you hear your donkey?

And the deeper word: Balaam's assignment was to curse what God had blessed. He was hired — paid — to use his prophetic anointing against the purposes of God. No matter what Balak offered him, no matter how many times he tried, God would not allow the curse to land. "How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed?" (Numbers 23:8). What this means for you: no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). No Balaam hired against you can curse what God has blessed. No fee paid, no ritual performed, no word spoken in darkness against your life can override the blessing of the God who blesses you. But you must be walking in alignment with God's blessing — not, like Balaam, compromising it for profit — to be covered by it fully.
