Whose Report Will You Believe?

THE WORD

Twelve spies went into Canaan. Twelve saw the same land. They brought back the same grapes — clusters so heavy it took two men to carry them on a pole. They all saw the same walled cities, the same Anakite giants, the same abundant, flowing, milk-and-honey land. The evidence was identical. The report was not. Ten came back with a report saturated with fear: "We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we." Two — Caleb and Joshua — came back with a report saturated with faith: "Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able." Same land. Same giants. Same walls. Completely opposite conclusions. The difference was not in what they saw — it was in what they believed about the God who had sent them.

The ten spies made the most catastrophic error a person of faith can make: they calculated God out of the equation. "We are not able" — speaking only of themselves, as if the God who parted the Red Sea and rained food from heaven was somehow irrelevant to the military situation in Canaan. They said, "We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight." Their grasshopper identity came first — and then they projected it onto how others saw them. Your identity determines your report. If you see yourself as a grasshopper before God's promises, you will interpret every giant as proof of your inability rather than as an invitation to God's power.

Caleb silenced the people. He did not debate. He did not form a committee to study the data more carefully. He silenced the fear report and issued a faith command: "Let us go up at once." At once. Immediately. Without waiting for the panic to settle, without engineering perfect conditions, without waiting for the giants to be smaller or the walls to be lower. The same moment the fear report was being delivered, Caleb was already moving toward possession. That is the spirit of faith — it does not wait for the fear to leave before it moves. It moves in the presence of the fear, trusting the God it has seen work before.

Ten spies caused a generation to die in the wilderness. The power of a wrong report is not limited to the one who gives it — it spreads, it infects, it costs everyone who receives it. The entire congregation wept and cried that night. They appointed a leader to take them back to Egypt. And God's grief turned to righteous anger: "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?" (Numbers 14:11). What report is filling your mouth and your community today — the report of the ten or the report of the two? Are you a Caleb, silencing fear and declaring possibility? Or are you one of the ten, spreading your grasshopper perspective to everyone around you?

CONFRONTATION QUESTION

In the area of your life where you currently face what looks like an impossible giant, whose report are you living by — the fear report of your circumstances or the faith report of a God who has never lost a battle?

FAITH RESPONSE

I believe the report of the LORD. I am well able to take the land God has promised me because the God who parts seas, rains manna, and dwells in the midst of His people goes before me into every giant's territory. I silence the fear report. I refuse the grasshopper identity. I am not a grasshopper — I am a child of the Most High God, and the giants in my promised land are already defeated. I go up. I go now. At once.

Prayer

God of Caleb, silence the ten-spy voices in my heart and in my environment. Silence every report that calculates You out of the equation and reduces my identity to what I can accomplish in my own strength. Give me the Caleb spirit — the one who, forty-five years later, still said "Give me this mountain" because he had fully followed the LORD his God. I will not die in the wilderness of fear and unbelief. I will enter the land. I choose faith. I go up.

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT

Truth must become practice.

Identify the "giant" in your life that your fear report says is too big to overcome. Write a Caleb-style faith declaration about that specific giant — one sentence beginning with "I am well able to..." — and speak it aloud at least five times today. Then take one tangible step toward possessing that territory.
