Gather to Stir One Another Toward Love

You have decided that you can be a fully functioning believer without consistent, committed, in-person participation in the body of Christ. You have built a theology of convenience around phrases like "I connect with God in nature," "I watch online," "My faith is personal," or "The church is full of hypocrites." And while every one of those statements may contain a fragment of real experience, none of them is sufficient justification for what the writer of Hebrews calls a habit — the deliberate, repeated habit of neglecting to meet together. Notice that the text calls it a habit. This is not describing someone who missed a Sunday due to illness. This is describing a pattern of life that has become normalized. And the writer of Hebrews calls this pattern out in the middle of a passage about stirring one another toward love and good works — because your absence does not just affect you.

It robs the people who were supposed to be stirred by your presence, your gifts, your story, and your faith. The word "consider" at the beginning of verse 24 is the Greek katanoeō — to think carefully, to fix the mind upon something with serious intentionality. The writer is saying: stop and think deliberately about how to provoke one another toward love and good works. This is not accidental. This is an assignment that requires strategic thought and deliberate action. You are supposed to be thinking about how to ignite love in the people around you. You are supposed to be thinking about how to spur them toward righteous action. And you cannot do that from your couch, in your pajamas, with your camera off, half-watching a livestream while you scroll your phone. The stirring that God is calling His people to do — and to receive — requires presence. Real presence.

Gathering should never be reduced to an attendance threat. A crowded service can still leave people unseen, while a homebound believer may participate deeply through visits, calls, prayer, and streamed worship. The command challenges isolation and congregational neglect together. Christian community must make safe, accessible room and protect people whose prior church experience involved manipulation, abuse, or exclusion.
