Grace Is Training You — Not Excusing You

FOUNDATIONAL READING · ESV

Titus 2:11–12

Read the complete passage slowly before entering the reflection. Let the biblical text govern every application that follows.

THE WORD

The grace of God has appeared — Paul uses the same verb he uses elsewhere for the appearance of the Savior Himself, the epiphany, the divine breaking-in. Grace is not an abstract theological concept. It appeared — in the person of Jesus Christ, in the finished work of the cross, in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And it appeared with a specific agenda that is entirely obscured by the dominant contemporary understanding of grace. Grace appeared bringing salvation — yes. But Paul immediately tells us what comes next, and it is not a blank check for unchanged living. Grace appeared "training us." The Greek word is paideuō — the word for the disciplined education of a child, the corrective formation of someone who is being shaped by an intentional process. Grace is not passive. Grace is a trainer. And a trainer has specific, demanding objectives.

The training agenda has two components: negative and positive. Negative: grace trains us to RENOUNCE ungodliness and worldly passions. Not manage them. Not reduce them. Not excuse them through theological sophistication. Renounce them — disown them, turn away from them, cut them off as though they never belonged to you. The grace of God is actively working in you to produce a growing, deepening, increasingly decisive rejection of everything that does not belong to the life of someone who has been saved. Worldly passions — the cravings, the appetites, the drives that pull the soul downward into the temporal and the sinful — grace is training you to say no to these with increasing clarity and decisiveness. If that training is not happening — if you are finding it easier to accommodate sin rather than harder — something has gone wrong in your understanding of what grace is.

And the positive training is equally demanding: grace trains us "to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age." Not in heaven. Not in the life to come. In the present age — right now, in the twenty-first century, in the city where you live, in the relationships you currently occupy, with the temperament and the history and the struggles you actually have. Self-controlled: the disciplined governance of your own impulses, appetites, and responses. Upright: the just, righteous treatment of others in every relationship and transaction. Godly: lives that reflect the character of the God who saved you. These are not aspirational ideals for the especially spiritual. They are the expected outputs of grace received. If the grace you have received has not been producing these in you — if your life is more self-indulgent, less upright, and no more godly than it was before you were saved — you may have received a counterfeit. Real grace trains. Real grace changes. Real grace produces the fruit it is designed to produce. Let it work.

CONFRONTATION QUESTION

In what specific area of your life has grace been used as a reason to remain unchanged rather than as the power to be transformed — and are you willing to acknowledge that this is a misuse of the grace that appeared to train you, not excuse you?

FAITH RESPONSE

I receive the truth that the grace of God is working in me as a trainer — not a permission slip for unchanged living! I refuse the counterfeit grace that covers sin without confronting it. By the authority of the Word of God, I receive the genuine grace of God that trains me to renounce ungodliness, reject worldly passions, and live a self-controlled, upright, and godly life in the present age — right now, in the real world I inhabit. Grace is changing me. I will not resist the training. I embrace it!

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Father, I confess that I have at times used grace as a license to remain the same rather than a power to become different. I have thanked You for the covering while resisting the change that the covering was meant to initiate. Forgive me. I receive Your grace today as the full thing it is — saving and sanctifying, forgiving and transforming, justifying and training. Let it do its complete work in me until I am self-controlled, upright, and genuinely godly in the present age.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT

Truth must become practice.

Identify one area where you have been using grace as an excuse for remaining unchanged — and today, make a specific, concrete decision to cooperate with the training grace is designed to produce: renounce one specific ungodly pattern, choose one act of self-control, and take one step toward a more upright way of living in that area.
