Titus 1:10–16 confronts disruptive teachers whose conduct contradicts their profession and harms households. Arneomai means to deny or disown; the phrase “by their works” identifies how that denial occurs here. Religious vocabulary cannot excuse corrupt conduct.
The warning is severe. It must not be flattened into a claim that every gap between belief and practice proves a person fraudulent. Titus 2:11–14 also describes grace training believers to live differently. Repentance and growth are real, and they are distinct from defending persistent wrongdoing.
Where confession masks exploitation or deceit, confront the wrong and seek appropriate accountability. Where a person admits failure and seeks change, support truthful repentance. Neither cheap reassurance nor indiscriminate condemnation serves the passage.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
