Your Profession and Your Practice Are Contradicting Each Other

Paul uses three of the strongest adjectives in his pastoral vocabulary to describe this condition: detestable, disobedient, unfit. And the people he is describing are not the openly wicked. They are not the avowed atheists or the flagrant immoralists. They are professing believers — people who use the language of faith, who identify themselves with the community of God's people, who know the vocabulary, the culture, the customs, and the calendar of the church. They profess to know God. And then Paul lands the indictment with devastating precision: "they deny Him by their works." The Greek word for deny is arneomai — to disown, to repudiate, to contradict by one's conduct. The works are a denial. The life is a contradiction of the confession. The conduct says something completely different from what the mouth declares — and the works are the truth-tellers.

Take inventory of your life across the domains where the denial most commonly occurs. Your finances: does the way you spend, save, give, and accumulate reflect the financial theology of someone who genuinely knows a God who owns everything and commands generosity? Your calendar: does the allocation of your time reflect the priorities of someone who genuinely knows a God who created time for His glory and commands stewardship of it? Your relationships: does the way you treat your spouse, your children, your colleagues, your enemies, and your church community reflect the relational ethics of someone who genuinely knows a God who is love? Your entertainment choices: does what you consume for pleasure reflect the sensibilities of someone who genuinely knows a holy God who commands purity of mind? The works cannot lie. You can craft any confession you want with your mouth. The works simply report on what is actually happening.

Here is the part that should arrest you: Paul calls this condition "detestable" — bdelyktoi — the same word used elsewhere to describe something that is abhorrent, repugnant, utterly repulsive to God. He is not describing a mild inconsistency that God views with patient understanding while waiting for you to grow into alignment. He is describing a condition He finds abhorrent. The gap between profession and practice is not a developmental phase — it is a crisis. It is not a sign of spiritual youth — it is a sign of spiritual fraud. And God is not fooled by religious vocabulary layered over a life that categorically refuses to reflect His character. The profile page that says "follower of Jesus" does not fool Him. The cross emoji in the bio does not move Him. The works do the talking. And the works cannot lie. Close the gap — not with better performance, but with genuine surrender, genuine repentance, and the genuine desire to know God in a way that actually shows up in how you live.
