Lamentations 1 gives ruined Zion a voice: ‘Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?’ The verse first asks readers to witness communal devastation rather than turn another person’s grief into an object lesson about their own compassion.
Faithful attention refuses voyeurism, quick explanations, and spiritual slogans. It listens, believes truthful testimony, learns the history of harm, and asks what solidarity or action the sufferer actually wants.
Compassion has limits and needs support; no individual can absorb every tragedy. Yet we can resist numbing indifference by seeing one neighbor clearly, sharing one burden wisely, and helping pursue justice without making ourselves the hero.
