Prevail Or Limp

THE WORD

Jacob wrestled all night with God and refused to let go until he received a blessing. That is the scene. The man who had spent his whole life running — running from Esau, running from Laban, running from consequence, running from himself — finally stopped running and started wrestling. And it changed everything. The name "Jacob" means supplanter, deceiver, the one who grabs at heels — and that was the story of his life until this night at the Jabbok. But when he grabbed hold of God and refused to release his grip, God changed his name, his nature, and his destiny. He went in as Jacob and came out as Israel. He went in as a man who lived by cunning and came out as a man who had prevailed with God.

But look at what it cost. The wrestling left him with a limp. God touched the hollow of his thigh, dislocated it, and from that point forward Jacob walked differently. He was marked by the encounter. You cannot wrestle with God and come out unchanged — and some of the change will be a limp. Some of what you considered your greatest strength, your most relied-upon strategy, your most practiced ability to manipulate and maneuver — God is going to dislocate it. Not to cripple you permanently, but to ensure that you walk with a reminder every single day that your strength is not in your own hip, your own hustle, or your own cleverness. Your strength is in the God you refused to release.

The deeper confrontation here is this: Jacob's crisis at the Jabbok came because he had a reckoning ahead of him — he was about to face Esau, the brother he had wronged decades before. And you cannot face your reckoning without first having your wrestling match with God. You cannot step into confrontation, correction, and restitution while still operating in your Jacob nature. God has to strip you before He can send you. God has to touch your thigh before He can change your name. You need that midnight wrestling more than you need a peaceful night's sleep.

Stop running from the thing God is calling you to face. Stop avoiding the encounter because you are afraid of what it might cost you. Every genuine prevailing with God comes with a limp — a holy limitation that keeps you dependent on Him and not on yourself. The limp is the mark of the genuine wrestler, the authentic servant, the man or woman who has truly been with God. Would you rather live fully intact and spiritually impotent — or would you rather limp and prevail? The choice is yours. God is waiting at your Jabbok tonight.
