Rahab's Scarlet Cord

THE WORD

Rahab was a prostitute. Not a formerly wayward woman who had recently cleaned up her life. Not a reformed sinner with an inspiring backstory that made her spiritually respectable. A practicing prostitute in the city of Jericho — pagan, Canaanite, living in a house built into the city wall — who heard the reports of what the God of Israel had done and made a decision that changed the trajectory of her entire lineage: she chose to believe. "For the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (Joshua 2:11). That declaration, from the mouth of a prostitute, is one of the most profound confessions of faith in the entire Old Testament. And God honored it completely.

The scarlet cord in the window is one of the most breathtaking symbols in all of Scripture. Red — the color of the blood of the Passover lamb. Tied in the window — publicly visible, unapologetically displayed. The condition of her safety was identical to the condition of Israel's safety in Egypt: the blood-red marker must be applied, must be visible, and must stay in the window. Rahab was told explicitly — the cord must remain. If she removed it, if she hid it, if she became embarrassed about the public declaration of her alignment with the God of Israel — the covenant protection would be void. The scarlet cord was her testimony, her covering, and her salvation — and it could not be hidden.

Are you hiding your scarlet cord? Are you ashamed of the blood of Jesus — of public alignment with Christ — in the environments where it costs you something? Do you wear your faith in church on Sunday and tuck it safely into your pocket when you walk into the boardroom, the family gathering, the social circle where it would make you look narrow, out of touch, or fanatical? Rahab, a Canaanite prostitute in a doomed city, tied the scarlet cord in her window in full view of everyone. She did not apologize for it. She did not explain it away. She staked her life and her household's lives on it. You cannot be saved by a cord you keep in your pocket.

And the household dimension must not be missed: Rahab's salvation was not individualistic. She brought her father, her mother, her brothers, and her entire family into her house and told them to stay inside, under the protection of the scarlet cord. The covering was extended to everyone who came under her roof. You carry that same authority for your household. Your faith is not only personal — it is a spiritual protection system for everyone in your circle who is willing to come under the covenant covering of the blood of Jesus. Hang the cord. Bring your people in. And do not remove it until the walls come down.
