The Sin In The Camp

FOUNDATIONAL READING · ESV

Joshua 7:11

Read the complete passage slowly before entering the reflection. Let the biblical text govern every application that follows.

THE WORD

After the stunning, miraculous, unprecedented victory at Jericho — walls crumbled, city taken without a conventional military strike, the glory of God on full display — Israel went up against a small city called Ai and was routed. Thirty-six men died. The hearts of the people melted and became like water. Joshua fell on his face before the ark, tore his clothes, put dust on his head, and cried out: Why? And God's answer was devastating in its precision: Israel hath sinned. Not "some Israelite has sinned." Not "there is a personal problem belonging to one individual." Israel hath sinned. The collective was affected by the individual. One man — Achan — had taken from the accursed things that God had specifically forbidden, hidden them in his tent, and that hidden sin had broken the entire nation's covenant standing with God, costing thirty-six men their lives at Ai.

This is one of the most confronting passages in all of Scripture for the body of Christ, because it dismantles the comfortable individualism that we have built our spiritual culture around. "My sin is personal. It only affects me. What I do in private is between me and God and does not concern the community." That is not biblical. Achan's private sin became Israel's public defeat. The hidden thing in his tent became the reason thirty-six families buried sons who should have come home victorious. Hidden, unconfessed, tolerated sin in the camp does not stay contained — it punctures the spiritual covering of the community and exposes everyone to an enemy that should have no access.

God told Joshua: "Neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you" (Joshua 7:12). God's presence — and therefore Israel's victory — was contingent on the removal of the sin in the camp. They could not win battles, they could not possess territory, they could not operate in the power and protection of God while Achan's treasure was hidden under his tent. And the church of Jesus Christ cannot operate in the fullness of God's power and presence while hidden sin is being tolerated — in leadership, in the membership, in the prayer rooms, in the households that constitute the body. The accursed thing must be removed. Not managed, not minimized, not hidden more cleverly — removed.

Achan confessed — eventually. "Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel" (Joshua 7:20). He named it specifically. He described it precisely. He owned it completely. There was no excuse, no mitigation, no blame-shifting. He took it. He hid it. He sinned. The confession was honest and complete. And then the accursed things were destroyed — not sold, not repurposed, destroyed. Because some things cannot be redeemed and reused; they must be utterly eliminated. What is your Achan? What is hidden under the tent of your private life that is costing your community, your household, your ministry victories they should be experiencing? The sin in the camp must be confronted. Confess it. Name it. Destroy it. And watch the victories return.

CONFRONTATION QUESTION

What have you taken and hidden under the tent of your private life — what secret sin, what forbidden thing, what spiritual compromise — that may be costing the people around you victories and God's presence that they should be experiencing?

FAITH RESPONSE

By the authority of the Word of God, I declare that there is no Achan's tent in my life. I expose every hidden thing to the light of God's presence. I confess completely, I surrender wholly, and I destroy utterly everything that has been taken from the accursed pile. My camp is clean. My household is clean. The sin that was costing us victory is gone, and the God who was not with us because of it — He is with us again. The victories return today. We advance on Ai. We take the land.

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Father, search my tent. Search the hidden places. Search the things I have gathered that You never authorized, the things I have buried beneath the respectable surface of my spiritual life, the things that are costing the people connected to me victories and breakthroughs they cannot understand. Show me my Achan. And when You show me, I will not deny it, negotiate it, or repackage it. I will confess it completely, surrender it fully, and destroy it utterly. Restore Your presence and Your victory to my camp. Let us take the land that the sin in the tent has been costing us.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT

Truth must become practice.

Conduct a "tent search" today — a thorough, honest, Spirit-led examination of your private life for anything hidden that does not belong there. Ask the Holy Spirit specifically: "Is there an Achan in my tent?" Then act on whatever He reveals — confess it, remove it, destroy it. Do not wait until the next defeat at Ai to take this seriously.
