FOUNDATIONAL READING · ESV
Daniel 1:8
Read the complete passage slowly before entering the reflection. Let the biblical text govern every application that follows.THE WORD
Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the king’s food and wine. His conviction belonged to Israel’s covenant identity in exile, and he pursued it through a respectful request rather than contempt or spectacle.
Not every preference is a biblical conviction, and not every cultural practice is compromise. Discernment asks what Scripture clearly requires, what conscience wisely permits, and how our choices affect neighbors.
Daniel combined resolve with tact, relationship, and a testable plan. Faithful conviction can be strong without becoming rude, conspiratorial, or self-righteous.
