Stand Still And See

The Red Sea in front of them. Pharaoh's army behind them. Mountains on either side. And the people of God doing what the people of God so often do when trapped between impossible circumstances — they panicked. They accused. They wished they were back in slavery. "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?" (Exodus 14:11). The misery they were willing to return to was a misery they at least knew. The unknown terror of a divine deliverance felt more threatening than the familiar oppression of a slave life. That is fear at its most insidious — it makes the prison look safer than the promise land.

But Moses — the same man who had argued with God at the burning bush, who had doubted his own adequacy, who had begged God to "send someone else" — stood in front of a terrified nation and spoke with an authority that was not his own: Fear not. Stand still. See the salvation of the LORD. Three commands. Not ten. Not a strategy meeting. Three commands — and they are the same three commands God is giving to you right now, in whatever Red Sea moment you are standing at today. Stop being afraid. Stop moving in your own panic. And watch what God is about to do.

Here is the part that will dismantle every self-reliant tendency in you: "The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace" (Exodus 14:14). Your greatest assignment in this moment is to be still and be quiet. Not passive — still. Not hopeless — at peace. The battle is not yours to win through your own ingenuity, your own connections, your own strategy, your own striving. God is saying: hold your peace, close your mouth, stop running back to Egypt in your heart, and watch Me work. And God worked. He parted the entire sea. He made the Israelites walk through on dry ground while the armies of their enemy were dismantled behind them. The enemies that they saw that day, they saw no more forever.

The enemies behind you — the accusations, the debts, the legal battles, the diagnosis, the relational damage, the failed business, the spiritual defeat — will not follow you into your future. God is parting a way through where no way exists, and the very forces that have been pursuing you are about to be swallowed up. But you cannot see it while you are screaming and running. Stand still. Look toward what God is doing, not at what is chasing you. The salvation of the LORD is working on your behalf right now. Do you believe it, or are you still mentally packing your bags to return to Egypt?
