Stop Building Your Own Tower

The builders of Babel were not godless atheists. They were people who believed in transcendence — they just wanted to be the ones who defined it and controlled access to it. "Let us make us a name." That is the sentence that should shake you. Not "Let us glorify God's name." Not "Let us build a monument to His faithfulness." But our name. Our legacy. Our platform. Our brand. The spirit of Babel is not ancient history — it is the spirit of this age, and if you are honest, it is fighting for space in your own heart. Every time you build for your own reputation more than for God's glory, you are laying another brick on a tower He is about to tear down.

God said after the Flood that humanity would fill the earth. The builders of Babel directly contradicted that mandate — "lest we be scattered." They were building to override God's direction, to centralize what God intended to spread, to use unity for the glorification of self rather than the advancement of the Kingdom. And here is the devastating irony: the very thing they tried to prevent is exactly what God brought to pass. He scattered them anyway. Their tower did not stop God's plan — it only delayed their obedience to it. Every time you try to build something contrary to God's mandate for your life, you are not stopping His will — you are only postponing your own surrender.

The Babel spirit is alive in ministry. It is alive on social media. It is alive in the church, in the pulpit, in the boardroom of Christian organizations where the name of God is invoked but the agenda is deeply, dangerously human. You know this spirit when the metrics that matter most are your platform numbers, your follower count, your speaking engagements, your recognition — and the intimacy of your walk with God is somewhere at the bottom of the list, an afterthought dressed in spiritual language. God will not share His glory. He said it plainly in Isaiah 42:8. The tower you are building for yourself, He will bring down. Not because He is cruel — but because He loves you too much to let you waste your life constructing monuments to yourself.

What are you building, and for whose name? This is the most important question any believer, any minister, any leader must answer with radical honesty. Examine your ambitions. Examine your prayers — who are they really about? Examine the language you use to describe your calling. Is it saturated with "my ministry," "my platform," "my audience," "my vision" — or is it saturated with surrender to a God whose name alone is worthy of the towers we build? Let Babel be a warning. Come down from the tower of self-promotion before God has to scatter you to bring you back to your assignment.
