The Glory Will Not Go With You

God offered Israel a stunning deal: You can still have the Promised Land. Milk and honey — the abundance, the inheritance, the geography of the promise — I will send an angel ahead of you to drive out your enemies. You will get everything you were promised. But I will not go with you. And when Israel heard this, they mourned. Because they understood something that the modern church has largely forgotten: the Promised Land without the presence of God is not the Promised Land at all. The destination without the One who called you there is just real estate. The blessing without the Blesser is an empty inheritance. The milk and honey without the glory is just food.

This is the offer the prosperity gospel has been presenting for decades: here is your land, here is your blessing, here is your breakthrough, here is your favor — and God is reduced to a delivery mechanism for the things you actually want. But Moses refused the deal. With breathtaking audacity, he said: "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here" (Exodus 33:15). Moses had been in enough of the presence of God to know that nothing else — not the land, not the angel, not the abundance, not the victory over enemies — was worth having if the Shekinah glory was absent. He chose the presence over the promise. And that choice changed everything.

The stiffneckedness that God cited as His reason for withdrawing is the same stiffneckedness that threatens your walk today. A stiffnecked person does not yield, does not turn, does not bow — they insist on their own direction regardless of God's command. Every time you refuse to repent, every time you insist on your own way, every time you choose your comfort over God's correction — you are stiffening the neck. And a stiffnecked people will receive the land but forfeit the glory. You will accumulate success while the presence of God quietly withdraws to the tent outside the camp, where Moses had to go to meet with Him because He had moved.

How far outside the camp has God's glory moved in your life? Do you notice when the presence is lifted? Or have you been so accustomed to going through the motions — the singing, the preaching, the spiritual language — that you can no longer tell the difference between an anointed room and an empty religious performance? The glory is not guaranteed to remain. God is not obligated to stay where He is not welcome, where His holiness is dishonored, where His commands are negotiated rather than obeyed. Cry out with Moses today: "Show me your glory." And be willing to have the stiffness in your neck broken as the price of His return.
