What Do You Have In Your House?

The widow came to Elisha with a crisis: her husband was dead, she had debt she could not pay, and the creditor was coming to take her two sons as slaves. She had nothing. She had already done the mental inventory and arrived at the conclusion that she lacked everything she needed. And Elisha’s question cuts right through her despair and lands in the most unexpected place: “What do you have in your house?” Not what do you need. Not what do you lack. What do you have? Because God does not work from your deficit — He works from what you already possess. Even when what you already possess seems laughably insufficient for the crisis you are facing.

A jar of oil. That is what she had. One jar. And Elisha sent her to borrow empty vessels from all her neighbors, and told her to shut the door, and told her to pour. And the oil poured from that single jar until every vessel was full — and it only stopped when there were no more vessels to fill. The oil multiplied in proportion to her capacity to receive. The miracle was already in her house — she had simply not been instructed in how to activate it. The limitation was not in the oil; it was in the number of empty vessels she brought.

What has God already placed in your house that you have been overlooking because your eyes are fixed on what you lack? You already have a gift — but you are waiting for permission to use it. You already have a relationship — but you are not treating it as the divine connection it is. You already have a skill, a story, a resource, a platform, a network, a seed — and you are staring at the creditor’s bill instead of asking God what to do with what is already in your hand. Stop fixating on the deficit. Open your eyes to the inventory. The miracle is already in the house.

But here is the confrontation: the oil stopped when the vessels ran out. Meaning — the limit on the miracle was not God’s supply; it was the widow’s preparation. She gathered a certain number of vessels and that determined how much oil she received. Your capacity to receive from what God has already placed in your house is directly proportional to your expectation, your preparation, and your willingness to shut the door and pour.
