Your Heart Is Too Hard And Too Unmoved

Josiah was a king who had just heard the word of God read for the first time — the Book of the Law had been found during Temple repairs and brought to him. And when the scribe read the words aloud, Josiah tore his robes. Not as religious theater. Not as cultural performance. He tore his robes because the word of God landed on a tender heart and broke it. He was undone by the reality that his nation had been violating the covenant of God for generations. And God’s response was immediate and personal: “Because your heart was tender...I also have heard you.” A tender heart moves the ear of God.

Now compare Josiah’s response to the response of the average modern believer to the word of God. We hear sermons that should shatter us and we give polite applause. We read scripture that should bring us to our knees and we move on to the next notification. We sit in the presence of the living God week after week, and we leave as unmoved as we arrived — because hardness of heart has become our default spiritual posture. We have heard so much for so long that the word no longer lands with weight. We are biblically informed and spiritually unmoved. And God calls that hardness.

Hard-hearted Christianity is one of the most dangerous conditions a believer can develop. Hebrews 3:13 warns against being “hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” The heart does not harden overnight — it hardens gradually, through repeated exposure to truth without response, through habitual hearing without doing, through seasons of conviction that are consistently resisted until the conviction itself stops coming. And the terrifying thing about a hard heart is that you can become so accustomed to its condition that it feels normal. You think you are fine. You think your theology is sound. And your heart has not been genuinely broken before God in years.

Josiah is the model. When was the last time you tore your clothes — metaphorically or literally? When did the word of God last reduce you to genuine tears? When did the state of your own soul, or your family, or your nation move you to the point of weeping before God rather than simply noting it as a theological concern? God honors the tender heart. God hears the tears. He promises it here. The question is whether your heart is still capable of being tender — or whether it has hardened into a religious routine that looks like devotion but feels nothing.
