You Are Not Supposed To Be Home Right Now

THE WORD

Three words in that verse carry the entire weight of this devotional: “But David remained.” When kings go out to battle — that was the season. That was the assignment. That was the expectation of David’s role and calling. His army went. His men went. And David stayed home. One season of AWOL. One season of comfort, of disengagement, of letting someone else handle the assignment — and in that unguarded, out-of-position moment, he saw Bathsheba bathing on the rooftop. The adultery did not begin with Bathsheba. It began the moment David chose comfort over calling.

Where are you supposed to be right now that you are not? What assignment has God given you that you have quietly handed off to someone else while you remained in the comfort of the familiar? What season of warfare are you sitting out because you convinced yourself you needed rest, you needed a break, you needed time? There is a season for rest — God designed it. But there is a difference between God-ordained rest and spiritual AWOL. David was not resting — he was avoiding. And the place of avoidance is the most dangerous place a believer can occupy, because it is precisely there that the enemy sets the trap.

When you are out of your divine position, you become vulnerable to everything that would never have had access to you had you been where God assigned you. The business opportunity that looked good because you were bored. The relationship that filled the void left by your unfulfilled calling. The distraction, the addiction, the temptation — it all gains entry through the open window of a life that is not occupied with God’s business. The safest place in the world is the center of God’s will. The most dangerous place is the comfortable corner you carved out for yourself outside of it.

Get up. Get back to the battle. Return to the post God assigned you. Whatever season of AWOL you have been in — whether it has been days, months, or years — the call of God does not expire while you are absent. Your army is in the field. The Ammonites are being sieged. And God is saying to you what every general says to the soldier who went absent without leave: it is time to return to your assignment. Get dressed. Get your armor on. Go.

What season of AWOL have you been in — what God-assigned position, calling, or battle have you been absent from — and what comfortable substitute have you let fill the space that your obedience should occupy?

FAITH RESPONSE

I declare that I will not remain when kings are supposed to go. I refuse the comfort of home when God has issued marching orders. I return to my post, I pick up my armor, and I get back into the position God assigned me. The season of AWOL is over. I am back in the battle, reporting for duty in the name of Jesus.

Prayer

Father, I repent for the seasons I stayed home when You sent me to battle — the assignments I avoided, the callings I shelved, the positions I abandoned because comfort was more appealing than obedience. Forgive me for the damage that occurred in my season of AWOL. Restore me to my divine position, recommission me to the assignment, and give me the will and the strength to remain in the field until the victory is won.
