Comfort Is Not the Measure of God’s Love

Deuteronomy 32 remembers God’s covenant care through the image of an eagle hovering over its young, spreading its wings, catching them, and bearing them. The Hebrew ʿur means to stir or rouse. The verse itself emphasizes protective presence. It does not say that an eagle tears apart a comfortable nest or deliberately throws young birds from a cliff, and we should not build theology on a popular illustration Scripture never supplies.

The image is powerful without embellishment. God found Israel in a wilderness, guarded the people, and carried them. His care was not always comfortable, but neither was hardship proof that He had engineered every wound. Some discomfort comes from faithful growth; some comes from our choices; some comes from injustice, illness, loss, or a broken world. Wisdom refuses to label every disruption “God stirring the nest.”

Comfort is therefore an unreliable measure of divine favor. Ease can become complacency, and obedience can be costly. Yet suffering can also require safety, lament, treatment, justice, and rest—not a command to endure preventable harm. The God pictured in the song does not stand at a distance celebrating the fall. He hovers, catches, bears, and remains present with His people. We must never use “growth requires discomfort” to pressure someone into remaining in abuse, neglecting health, or accepting another person’s irresponsible demands.

When comfort must be surrendered for truth, courage, calling, or love, trust God’s sustaining presence. When harm is occurring, seek protection rather than spiritualizing danger. When rest is given, receive it without guilt. The question is not whether life feels easy or hard, but whether we are walking faithfully with the God who carries His people through both wilderness and flight. His presence is not proven by perpetual disruption; covenant care includes shelter, nourishment, correction, endurance, and peace under His wise care.
