He Loved Us at Our Worst, Not Because of It
The cross demonstrates love before moral improvement and grace powerful enough to transform what sin has damaged.

THE DEVOTION
Paul makes a statement that dismantles both religious pride and cultural confusion in a single sentence: 'God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.' The word is sunistemi — to demonstrate, to prove beyond doubt by putting it on display. God did not wait for us to get our act together, clean up our mess, or earn His affection. While we were still sinners — at our absolute worst — Christ died. That is the timing of divine love, and it is staggering.
But here is where two errors get corrected at once. The religious error says God loves you because you're good, so you'd better perform. Romans 5:8 destroys it — He loved you while you were still a sinner, before any performance. But the cultural error says that because God loves you as you are, He therefore approves of everything you are. Romans 5:8 destroys that too — because notice WHY Christ died: to rescue you from the very sin you were still in. He loved you at your worst, but not because of it.
This is the crucial distinction our age keeps missing. 🏿 'God loves me as I am' is gloriously true. 'Therefore God is fine with me staying as I am' is a deadly lie. His love met you in your mess — but it came to lift you out of it, not to leave you in it and call it good. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ says it plainly: the same love that embraced you at your worst refuses to leave you there.
The cross holds grace and holiness together. God’s prior love removes every claim to self-righteousness, while union with Christ begins transformation that no person can boast in. Growth may be slow, uneven, and supported by community or treatment. Love does not make the wounded or struggling person disgusting; it creates a safe ground from which truth, repentance, repair, and new life can begin.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
