The High Always Sends a Bill
Sin advertises immediate gain while concealing its wages; grace tells the whole truth and offers life as God’s gift rather than human earnings.

FOUNDATIONAL SCRIPTURE · ESV
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Romans 6:23 (ESV)
WISDOM WHISPERS™
“Sin gives you an advance and charges you interest for the rest of your life. Every high is a loan, and the collector always comes.”— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
Word Studywages, a soldier's pay, earned compensation — what is owed and paid out for services rendered; a debt that must be settled. Sin pays opsonion — wages earned and owed. The high is not a gift; it is a wage that comes with a bill. Only eternal life is the free gift.
THE DEVOTION
Paul uses a financial word that exposes the entire con of sin: opsonion — wages. 'The wages of sin is death.' Wages are not a gift; they are what you have earned, what is owed to you, the compensation that must be paid out. And that word tells the truth about every sin that promises pleasure: the high is never free. It is an advance, a loan, and sin always — always — sends a bill. The collector may be delayed, but the collector always comes.
This is the deception in the moment of temptation. Sin presents itself as pure gain — pleasure, escape, relief, thrill — with no mention of cost. It hands you the high like a free sample. But it was never free. It was borrowed against your future, and the interest compounds silently. The addict knows this best: the first high felt like a gift, and every high since has been chasing that feeling while paying a mounting debt that eventually costs everything — relationships, health, dignity, life itself.
But notice the deliberate contrast Paul draws in the very same sentence. Sin pays wages, but God gives a gift. One is earned debt; the other is free grace. 'The free gift of God is eternal life.' You cannot earn eternal life the way you earn sin's wages — it can only be received. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ says it plainly: sin sells you a high and collects a bill you can't pay, but God offers a gift that costs you nothing because it already cost Him everything.
So the next time sin dangles the free sample, remember the invoice that comes with it. Nothing sin offers is actually free; the pleasure is a loan against your soul, and the collector is on the way. But there is a gift with no hidden bill, no compounding interest, no collector — eternal life in Christ Jesus, paid in full at the cross by the only One who could afford it. Stop taking sin's advances. Receive God's gift. One will bankrupt you forever; the other makes you rich for eternity, free of charge.
