Surrounded by Followers, Starving for a Friend

Proverbs draws a distinction our generation desperately needs: 'A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.' Many companions — versus one true friend. And notice the warning: having MANY companions can actually lead to ruin, while one clinging, faithful friend is worth more than a crowd. This ancient proverb reads like a prophecy of the social media age, where a person can be surrounded by thousands and still be utterly, achingly alone.

We have confused connection counts with connection. You can have thousands of followers, hundreds of friends on a list, endless notifications and likes and comments — and not have a single person you could call at three in the morning when your world is falling apart. The metrics are impressive and the reality is hollow. Followers watch you; they don't know you. They react to your highlight reel; they've never seen your tears. It is entirely possible to be the most 'connected' generation in history and the loneliest.

The Hebrew points to what we're actually starving for: a dabeq friend — one who clings, sticks close, and remains. Not a follower who surrounds you when things are good, but a friend who cleaves to you when things fall apart. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ says it plainly: you were made for a handful of people who truly know you, not a crowd of strangers who merely watch you — and no number of followers will ever satisfy the hunger for one real friend.
