Evil is not defeated when it reproduces itself through our response.

WISDOM WHISPERS™
“The battle between good and evil is won not by might, but by the love that builds, binds, and heals.”— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
Word StudyTo conquer, prevail, or overcome. Paul describes victory not as domination over people, but as refusing evil permission to determine the character of our response.
THE DEVOTION
Evil seeks two victories. First, it desires to wound us. Then it attempts to recruit our pain as an instrument of its continuation. Retaliation can feel like strength while quietly giving the offender authority to reproduce his spirit within us. Paul commands a victory deeper than revenge: do not be overcome by evil.
The Greek verb nikaō means to conquer or prevail. In Romans 12, conquest is radically redefined. Believers bless persecutors, refuse personal vengeance, feed enemies, and answer evil with good. This is not passive surrender to injustice. It is active resistance against becoming what we oppose.
Good builds where hatred tears down. It binds wounds instead of exploiting them. It speaks truth, protects the vulnerable, pursues justice through righteous means, and refuses to dehumanize even the guilty. Christian love is not sentimental weakness; it is disciplined power that keeps evil from selecting our weapons and shaping our soul.
Overcoming evil with good does not require unsafe access, erased consequences, or silence before abuse. Boundaries can be good. Accountability can be loving. Justice can restrain what mercy does not excuse. The difference lies in the aim: righteousness seeks protection, repentance, and repair, while vengeance seeks emotional satisfaction through another person’s pain.
Win the battle at the level of character. Build something hatred cannot construct. Bind what cruelty left bleeding. Love without surrendering truth. When evil arrives, let it meet a life so governed by Christ that it cannot multiply through you. Good may appear slower than retaliation, but it carries the only victory that does not leave another generation poisoned.
