So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

WISDOM WHISPERS™

The body is neither an idol nor an accident; it is a creaturely gift entrusted to us beneath the wisdom and mercy of God.
— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
בָּרָאbaraʾ

Word StudyBaraʾ means to create and is characteristically used of God’s creative action. Human embodiment belongs to received creation rather than autonomous self-invention.

THE DEVOTION

Genesis presents humanity as created in God’s image and embodied as male and female. Christian theology therefore refuses to treat the body as meaningless material beneath an entirely self-created identity. Bodies carry creaturely significance, limits, vulnerability, relationship, and vocation.

But doctrine must be spoken pastorally. Some people experience profound distress regarding their sexed bodies, and that distress should not be mocked, sensationalized, or reduced to a political prop. Gender dysphoria can involve serious suffering. Faithful care requires listening, safety, family patience, informed clinical wisdom, and rejection of bullying or violence.

Receiving the body does not mean every bodily condition is easy or every feeling aligns peacefully with embodiment. Creation groans. Illness, disability, trauma, infertility, aging, and psychological distress remind us that embodied life is both gift and burden in a fallen world. The church must make room for lament without surrendering its theology of creation.

Nor should Genesis 1:27 become a shield for narrow stereotypes. Men and women display wide ranges of temperament, interest, appearance, gifting, and calling. A boy is not less male because he dislikes sports. A woman is not less female because she leads, reasons forcefully, or rejects cultural expectations. Scripture is richer than caricature.

Christian hope finally points beyond present discomfort to resurrection. God does not discard embodied life; He redeems it. The resurrection of Jesus declares that salvation is not escape from creaturehood but the renewal of the whole person. That future keeps us from despair when the body is painful and from arrogance when our own embodiment feels uncomplicated.

Honor the body without worshiping it, despising it, or using it to despise another person. Seek wise care for embodied distress. Refuse cruelty. Submit sexuality and self-understanding to Christ in patient community. We are not saved by perfect comfort with ourselves; we are held by the Creator who knows our frame and promises resurrection.

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Creator God, teach us to receive our bodies with gratitude, honesty, and hope. Draw near to all who experience embodied distress, protect them from cruelty, and surround them with wise and compassionate care. Free Your church from stereotypes, fear, and contempt while keeping us faithful to Your created wisdom.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

BENEDICTION
